Soil salinity assessing in semi-arid and agricultural context : the case of the Gorom-Lampsar perimeters in the Senegal River Delta

Abstract

Soil salinity is one of the most important problems affecting many areas in the world. Its presence in agricultural areas reduce the annual yields of most crops in particular in arid and semi-arid zones. This article deals with the soil salinity mapping in Gorom-Lamsar axis which is located in the NW of the Sahelian zone in Senegalese river delta. Its climatic, pedological and hydrological characteristics give it its multiple agricultural potential and its ecosystem characteristics. This study uses remote sensing technology, ground measurements and geostatistics to map salinity levels in Gorom-Lampsar. As a first step, reprocessing of Sentinel L-1C images taken in May 2019 is applied. Salinity Indices ares used. The field’s electrical conductivity (EC) measurements done also in May 2019 are used as a ground truth data for the correlation analysis with an index created by us with classification of fields condition classes. We used the simple linear regression (SLR) between EC and Is to predict EC on all point of Gorom-Lampsar and ordinary krigging to maps the levels of salinity. This rescherch shows that the salinity levels in the Gorom Lampsar depends on the fields conditions EF (Exploited fields), NEF (Non Exploited Fields) and ABF (Abandoned fields)
