Intangible Risks of the Musical World. Part 4/ The Risk of Being Unable to Learn.

Résumé

The social psychology of learning motivation offers a relevant and well-documented approach for understanding how, right from the beginning of training, psychological frames of mind that are more or less effective are adopted and promoted by our educational and family environments. These "good" or "bad" motivational habits are indicative of the different ways in which we relate to work, and they help explain why not all of us are ready to tackle without risk and persevere through the massive amount of work needed for an artistic career. The author looks in particular at a rather immature type of relationship a student can have with respect to normative evaluation, namely, one that causes some individuals to focus on measuring their performance against that of others. This focus may detract from effective practicing and is totally unjustified in this difficult field where self-evaluation bounded by suitable references cannot in some ways be overstepped.
